End of Summer Party!!

August is coming to a close and soon Autumn will be here blowing its cool winds and shorter days our way. We decided to seize the moment and have one last blow out an end of summer party. We have a projector and the new Avengers just came out on Blu-ray so the kids wanted to have a movie night outdoors so they could lounge with friends in the grass and play on the swing set while watching a movie.

I wanted to do some fun and delicious treats so I did a little Pinterest stalking and found this incredible Italian Soda bar for an outdoor movie night at Thirty Handmade Days. Mique, the blogs creator has some incredible ideas for a low-budget fantastic movie night. I am so excited to set up my own Italian Soda Bar. My kids have Dairy Allergies so we made sure to purchase only dairy-free creamer for our soda bar. There are so many different flavors and types you can choose from, and the texture and taste wasn’t any different than the full dairy.

We even barbecued for the event, Italian sausage to keep with the theme! Our kids and their friends had a great night, evidenced by the way they fell asleep at the end of the movie still seated in their pillow pit they had created. I hope your summer ends on a similarly great note.

Star Wars Legos: DIY Classic Bricks

Legos are everywhere at my house. Themed ones, classic ones, it doesn’t matter. They take up a lot of space! But we love them — so I try to let that go.

My kids always want the next big thing in Legos. Usually they want whatever is popular at the time. We have Harry Potter, Avengers, Batman, and Star Wars. I love that they love to build them, and play with them constantly. It really is not a waste at all. It does however get costly. This month my kids wanted the new X-wing Lego for Star Wars, but it just wasn’t in the budget. Instead I did a little googling and found this awesome DIY X-Wing from classic bricks. We have several boxes of classic bricks (for you non-Lego parents those are plain bricks with no theme) just sitting in the bin. So why not use them to create our own X-wing?

I found this super cool YouTube channel called Bricksir. I subscribed, because Legos, but you don’t have to in order to watch. Then I brought my kids in to watch the videos. All of the videos detail how to build incredible figurines, popular characters, cars, etc. from classic bricks.

My kids spent HOURS on the channel building incredible items. The instructions are simple to follow and help your kids along the way. It is very similar to the books that come with Legos as far as instructions go. So kids that can follow the build instructions in paper form should be just fine with the YouTube video.  It was a lot of fun watching them build, and it is nice to know I have more ideas for them for future builds right at my fingertips.
