Middle School Boy Books: The Dollar Kids

In today’s world it can be hard to pervade that middle school mindset . The middle school kids of today deal with so much more than we did at their age. We always try to highlight a book that kids can relate to, this month we have found a book perfect for the middle-school student in your life.

The Dollar Kids follows twelve year old Lowen, an amateur comic-book artist, as he traverses the long road of grief. Lowen’s neighbor, Abe, has recently died. Lowen hasn’t told anyone, but he thinks it’s his fault. It is affecting everything in Lowen’s life — he cannot even write or draw anymore. When he hears that a town is giving away houses for only $1 he and his family think it is the perfect opportunity to move away from the town where only grief follows them and try to begin anew. But his family soon discovers that no matter where you go things tend to catch up to you.

This is a beautifully written story about the honest things in life — it details emotions, fears, life, happiness, and the love we share with our family and friends. It is a coming of age novel that really exhibits the struggles a student in middle school would endure. It shows how a person can grow from loss, can learn from struggle, and that together a family can survive just about anything.

Best Books: Harry Potter Set

We are a few days late, but we wanted to wish Harry Potter a very happy birthday. What better way to wish him a better birthday than to talk up those amazing books that follow him on his incredible adventure with his two best friends Ron and Hermione?

I discovered the Harry Potter books when I was a teenager. When I was a senior in high school, I thought, these books were for kids. I was so wrong. A friend of my mother’s bought me the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for Christmas. She knew I loved to read and had heard the books were really popular. I smiled graciously and accepted the sweet gift. Little did I know that she had just purchased me a book that would truly make me feel every emotion, and take me on an adventure that lasted nearly 20 years for me.

Now as a mom of a new reader I take great joy in sharing my Harry Potter collection. However, I want my kids to have something of their own. I have begun purchasing the illustrated editions for my younger kiddos, but older kiddos will love this boxed set as well. Both sets are beautiful and will take you on an amazing adventure from beginning to end. We promise!
