Let’s have a Monster Bash!!

Halloween is for fun, fright, and food! I love getting to bake and create amazing meals, snacks, and treats to spook and delight my family. This year we are planning a Halloween Monster Bash to celebrate Halloween and my youngest’s birthday (his birthday actually falls the week after Halloween but he ADORES Halloween so we celebrate then!) I get the privilege of creating an incredible birthday cake that is Halloween themed. We are planning a Monster Bash so I want to continue with the monster theme and create a monster cake.

I scoured Pinterest for incredible ideas and came up with this fun and simple design from The Cake Blog. This Monster design features frightening monster eyes on a plain white iced cake. It is so simple, and so perfect I cannot wait to bake it. My son was so excited he wanted me to do a test bake just so he could eat it twice! We didn’t do that, but we did decide that we would put a fun gel in the center of the cake to make it more ghoulish and monster-like. We plan to make white cake with that we have died green, with lemon jelly as the filling. My son thinks it will be perfect for his party.

The fun of cakes is how much you can change and still achieve the same aesthetic. While we are changing the inside of the cake to fit our purpose the outer part of the cake will remain the same as The Cake Blog’s original vision.

Spooky Decor: Halloween Decoration DIY

It is September, and for many that means back-to-school routine, cooler weather, and shorter days. In our house, it means Halloween prep. We have already established that I love holidays. I decorate for Halloween and Christmas WAY before I should. It bother’s some people. I like to do it because ti brings me joy, it brings my family joy, and when people see it they are joyful too. We could use a little more joy in this world!

So do not be upset when I tell you I am already decorated for Halloween, and my kids already have their costumes. I am by no means an over achiever. I just enjoy certain things in life, and Halloween is one of them. So I have a fun and frugal Halloween decor idea for you to try. This year we created a Vampire Welcome Mat for our front door. Thank you to Megan Andersen at Creative Live for the fangtastic idea….. I kid.

What you will need:

– Jute doormat with rubber skid on the bottom (10$ at Home Depot)
– Pencil
– Box cutter or cutting blade
– Cutting mat
– Sharpie in pink, yellow or any other medium-light color
– Acrylic paint in white or unbleached titanium, black, and red
– Medium and small sized paint brushes
– Small paper plate

All of this is fun and simple stuff, much of it we already had. Thanks to Megan I now have a really cool and unique welcome mat for the front door this Halloween. The kids and their friends have already started commenting on how cool it is. I so rarely get to be the cool mom, so I enjoy getting these kudos at Halloween. After all, holidays are the times when parents get to be kids too!

Kitchen Tools for Kids

We love to cook together as a family. Recently my kids have expressed the desire to be more helpful in the kitchen. While we have always involved them we have not been keen to let them cut much due to the risk of cutting themselves. Our kids are still under the age of 7, but we find that we do not want to discourage them from helping. So we did a little research and found this really great set of utensils perfect for little hands.

Curious Chef is a line of kitchen products designed with kids in mind. They feature knives, baking utensils, and even specialty gadgets like apple slicers. We wanted our kids to be able to get snacks themselves and be able to help us when they wanted to without worrying about them. The Curious Chef knives are made of nylon with a tooth-like edge. They are perfect for cutting meat, hard vegetables and fruits, and they are less likely to cut your child. The work with a sawing motion, which is fairly easy for little hands to figure out.

They are available on Amazon in multiple sets. We chose the set that came with knives and the apple slicer since we spend a lot of time eating apples and baking with them this time of year. So far our kids love them. We even ordered an extra set to have at their Grandma’s house because she loves when they come over to bake with her. If you have a little one that loves to help in the kitchen you should definitely check it out, it has been a lifesaver for us.
