Sunglasses!

Summer brings lots of outdoor activities. We try to stay protected in the sun, rash guards, hats, sunblock, etc. But did you know that your eyes can be damaged by the sun as well? And that kids are more likely to forget to protect their eyes? We expect parents to care about their eyes, after all we need sunglasses for driving in the harsh sun. But we frequently forget about the fact that our kids spend just as much if not more time in the harsh sun than we do. They often times do not understand the need to protect their eyes form the sun, and lets face it, some of them stare right in to the sun.

Sunglasses protect our eyes from the harsh glare of the sun, but the right kind of sunglasses also protect us from UV light. The Boy’s Store understands the need to protect those little eyes and carry a variety of UV protective sunglasses. They may be stylish, but they also protect!

Best Books: Who Was Charles Darwin

We recently discovered a new to us series, the “Who Was” series. We love to read about history and learn about new people and places. My kids love when they can read a book by themselves and not need me, and with non-fiction that can sometimes be difficult because the language used is often lofty and advanced. The “Who Was” series is great because their target audience is early readers. The language is simple and straight-forward and they are meant to act as a beginners guide to early learners.

There are so many different books available in this incredible series. Biographies range from Jane Goodall to Martin Luther King, and include others such as George Washington, Genghis Khan, and William Shakespeare. Each book allows the reader to get an introductory look in to an historical figure.

This month we chose Charles Darwin because our kids are interested in exploration, animals, and how the animals change. This book gives a great introduction to Survival of the Fittest, looks at Darwin’s expedition to the Galapagos Islands, and gives some details in to his personal life. If you have a child that is interested in learning about adaptation and how species change or disappear this is a great book to start with. Many schools will even give extra credit at the beginning of the school year for students that read and log their reading or create book reports during the holidays. This is an excellent book for a book report, so check it out.

Homemade Cherry Icee: Summer Treats

Are your kids already finished with school? We finish this week. Which means that we will already be enjoying the slower pace of summertime. While mommy and daddy continue to work all summer and the kids go to day camp we try to maintain some sort of slower routine when it comes to summer. There is no homework and we continue our sports, but the days are longer and we have a little more time to enjoy them.

One of the ways we like to celebrate the end of school is with a sweet treat. We love icees, frozen yogurt, and popsicles. This year we are going with Icees. Normally we run out and buy some yummy ones, but the shop that sold them near us moved and we are now looking to create them at home so we don’t have to wait so long to enjoy them. This incredibly simple recipe comes from Passion For Savings and can be crated at home really easily. Be sure to check out Passion For Savings’ other great recipes since they are great at creating your favorite copy-cat recipes for very little money!

This recipe is so sweet and so spot on for a cherry icee that we cannot wait to try it again. It will definitely be one of our go to summer treats from now on!
