Helping Kids Deal with Stress: Yoga for Kids

It may sound silly, but stress can affect our children too. You may laugh, after all, how can someone who has no real responsibilities be affected by stress? Our kids may be small but they absorb the world around them in very large amounts. They are after all little sponges. The difficult part about their absorbing so much is that they absorb what they cannot understand, and they do not know how to deal with the things they absorb. It can be overwhelming. It can be overwhelming for adults, imagine how it feels for a child. We can help with their stress levels by giving them tools to deal with their stress. Activity, conversation, and eating well will all help with that.

One great activity to aid in stress relief is Yoga. Yoga teaches breathing methods that aid in healing the body, and stretches that can relieve tension and build muscle. The greatest thing about Yoga is that you do not have to join a gym or class to participate. You can do it anywhere, anytime.

Here are a few great Yoga poses that are perfect for young children. Try them with your kids, after all, kids are sponges. If they see you doing them they will try them as well. By instilling these modes of stress relief now we could aid our children in becoming better equipped to handle stress in the future. Which also will aid us to handle stress better. Give it a try, it might just change your outlook.

  1. Start with the head of the dragon. We used light green. Cut the head in a peanut shape, but at the top cut out a heart shape to accommodate ears for the dragon.
  2. Next paint the top of the bubble wrap (bubble side up) green. Now use it as a stamp on the dragons face.
  3. Next cut pointy ears, in a triangle shape out of the darker green, and glue them to the spot meant for the ears.
  4. Now winged eyebrows out of the dark green paper and glue it just below the dragons ears.
  5. After that you can cut two small circles for eyes, and two larger circles for nostrils. Glue them in place.
  6. Finally cut out some fantastic fire and glue to to the nostrils so that it looks as if your dragon is breathing fire!
