Rubbing Art: Leaves, Toys, Names, and MORE!

Fall usually brings  lot of art time in our household. We do a lot of new art activities but my kids’ favorite will always be leaf rubbings. This year I wanted to find something other than just leaves to create what can only be described as my kids favorite art activity. I do not know why it is their favorite activity. It must be the fact that they get to see something appear that wasn’t there before. Or perhaps it is simply that they get to destroy a crayon to create their art? Either way they love making leaf rubbings.

I do not know why I never thought of changing the activity before now. But by simply adding something other than a leaf, an object that still causes a relief image to appear when rubbed with a crayon, my kids are experiencing a brand new activity.

Or course when I finally thought to try this and wanted to look up some new ideas I should have known that I would find some amazing ideas on none other than Frugal Fun 4 Boys. Sarah ALWAYS has amazing ideas for fun for boys, and now she has incredible fun for boys and girls! We have highlighted Sarah and her blog many times here at The Boy’s Store Blog. We love her ideas for crafts and activities. Even though I knew what I wanted to do by replacing leaves in the leaf rubbings Frugal Fun 4 Boys came up with some ideas I never even thought of. So head on over to Sarah’s blog to see some amazing ideas. And enjoy watching as your kids get very excited about finding new and exciting objects in their rubbing art activity. Rubbing art

Make Your Own Lego Candy Dispenser: Valentine’s Day Love for Your Boy

Candy and Valentine’s Day are sort of synonymous, well at least they are at our house. We love to share a little treat with our sweeties on Valentine’s Day. After all, love is love. And we love our kiddos more than anything so why not make them feel special on Valentine’s Day too. We usually just do a little something small. For example a samll candy bar, or a little bag of gummy worms, or a small toy or book. It is sometimes easier to do something special for the girls because let’s face it the stores cater to them on Valentine’s Day. This year we felt like doing something a little extra special for our boys. So we got searching, and guess what we found? Our friends at Frugal Fun 4 Boys had a pretty spectacular idea. Lego Candy Dispenser.

Our friend Sarah, and fellow mommy, over at a Frugal Fun 4 Boys created this pretty amazing looking candy dispenser out of the greatest thing on Earth. Legos!!! I have not met a boy yet that did not think legos were the coolest thing on the face of the Earth. I also have not met a boy that doesn’t love candy. So why not pair them together. It seems like the perfect no-brainer.

You will need legos to do this project, so make sure they are clean and ready to go. You will need an assortment of Legos so be sure to read all of Sarah’s tutorial before starting so you know what blocks you will need. Sarah has you covered for learning how to use it as well with a great little YouTube video at the end of her tutorial. She suggests small candy pieces like skittles, m & m’s and such but you could also do Reese’s pieces or other pieces candy. Small candy hearts might even work since it is Valentine’s Day.Lego Candy Dispenser

We hope you and your boys enjoy this incredibly cool craft. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Fun Activities: Pipe Cleaner Ninjas

Pipe cleaner ninjas

Last year we did a great feature on a fantastic mom of four busy boys, Sarah Dees. Sarah is the busy Mom that loves to share fun and frugal activities and crafts with fellow moms on her blog frugalfun4boys.com. Well this month we want to share one of her incredibly easy and interesting crafts that any boy will love.

Pipe Cleaner Ninjas are the perfect craft for boys. Not only can they manipulate them into any shape they want they can also use their creativity to design them in any color they want. Let them practice their ninja skills all day long as they create bodacious bendy bodies.

What You Will Need:

Pipe cleaners
Colored drinking straws
Plastic pony beads
Wooden beads for the heads
Sharpies (a fine tip black for the faces, and larger tipped colored ones to color the heads)

What You Will Do:

1. Twist 3 pipe cleaners together, make sure that you go around a couple of times so that they are indeed twisted together completely.
2. Take 3 pony beads and place them on the legs twisted together.
3. Next cut a drinking straw into 8 1in segments. Then put two segments on each leg (with a pony bead in the middle) and each arm (no pony bead.)
4. Twist the extra pipe cleaner into hands and feet. For the hands, try to make one loop for the “hand” and a smaller loop for a thumb. Next wrap the excess around the wrist to help keep the straws from sliding off. For the feet, form one loop and then wrap the excess around the ankle.
5. Next use the wooden beads and the sharpie markers and create ninja faces. Them slide the beads over the neck pipe cleaner. To secure the head try twisting the end into a knot and trim off the excess, you may want to put a dab of glue at the end to keep the knot tight.

Now enjoy your pipe cleaner ninjas! Kee-ya!
