Dogwood: Active Clothes For Active Boys

Dogwood owner and creator Steve Springer knew exactly what he was looking for when he created the ultimate boy brand Dogwood. Steve wanted a brand that would be all boy, and that is exactly what he got. We asked Steve a few questions about his boy brand to get a better understanding of the great boy brand that parents love and kids adore.

The Boy’s Store: How did you co me up with the name Dogwood? Does it hold some deeper meaning?

Steve Springer: I wanted a real boys sounding name that would represent a fun active boy, someone that likes adventure and exploring. I had a long list of names that expressed the above comments and Dogwood seemed to fit that description in my mind. I did not want a cute sounding name, because that’s not what our style represented.

The Boy’s Store: what was your mission or purpose when you created Dogwood? What makes you design the way you do?

Steve Springer: Dogwood was established in 1998, and our goal then and now, is to create a fun boys clothing line that boys love to wear. We design our collection with updated styling for today’s active boy. Our screen print inspirations come from vintage looks to humorous sayings that relate to the uniqueness of boys.

The Boy’s Store: Do you have any specific inspirations or motivations in your design? Is there a style decade that you are inspired by?

Steve Springer: I love the 70’s and early 80’s much of my inspiration stems from there. When I’m creating the line I often try and think what a 4-7 year old would think or like in his designs. I also think of the mothers when it comes to some of our fun sayings like, “trouble is my business and business is good.

The Boy’s Store: How did you get started in this industry?

Steve Springer: I started my apparel carrier with Nordstrom in 1990. I was a buyer with them for 5 years and I loved it, but I always wanted to do my own thing. So in 1998 I left Nordstrom and started Dogwood in my basement. With 2 sewing machines and lots of ideas, I made my first sample line and away we went.

The Boy’s Store: What do you have coming up in the future involving your brand that you are excited about?

Steve Springer: We are continually trying to keep our looks fresh and new, using unique washing techniques and updated styling, keeping in mind boys like cool comfortable clothes and moms like style and clothing that will last!!

We whole-heartedly agree that Mom’s love clothes that last, and that is why we love Dogwood. Check out some of their best work at The Boy’s Store now.
